Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Ice Bucket Challenge

To start off I would like to say Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ah-my-uh-TRO-fik- La-tuh-ru skluh-RO-sis) also known as ALS is often called Lou Gehrig's Disease. Lou Gehrig’s Disease affects the motor neurons in the brain and over years shrinks the nerve cell. Motor neurons are the nerve in your brain that controls your muscle movement, upper and lower motor neurons give messages to the brain. Upper sends the messages from the brain to the spinal cord, Lower sends message  from the spinal cord to the muscle. So in the end you lose control of your body and turn Paralyzed, but luckily you don’t lose control of your mind however for most you can’t talk. Now you know what it is and if you already knew about it you just got refreshed so you can actually write a good reply because you know what  ALS is.

Facts about ALS:
  • ALS is often called Lou Gehrig's Disease after Lou Gehrig a Hall-a-Fame baseball player for the New York Yankees who was diagnosed with ALS in 1930.
  • In England and Australia ALS is called Motor Neurone Disease(MND)
  • The French mostly refer to ALS as maladie de Charcot the after the French Doctor who first wrote about ALS in 1869

Next up, let's now start up with something fun and freezing... the ALS donation. Millions of people and celebrities did the ALS ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE. Once you get nominated you have 24 hours to do the challenge and donate. The challenge (as I will call it)has been all over the web so I would not be surprised if you also know about it with all the videos and comments around the web. The reason they do the challenge is because there are walks and runs for cancer and other donating things for different causes, but since ALS is very rare they only do one huge thing to donate once a year. We Canadians made wait for it …$13,263,681 our goal was $10,000,000 so we’ve raised 133% of our goal, great job canada! To see the video’s go on YOUTube and search Ice Bucket Challenge and there they are.

Extra: The official name Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis comes from the Greek words:
  • "a" for without
  • "myo" for muscle
  • "trophic" for nourishment
  • "lateral" for side (of the spinal cord)
  • "sclerosis" for hardening or scarring

Now here are my questions for you: (you don’t just have to answer the questions you can write more if you have your own IDEAS, which I am sure you do)
  1. Did you/ your family or someone you know do the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and donate? (I do)
  2. Have you heard of Lou Gehrig’s Disease or ALS?
  3. Have you and your family ever donated to any cause?
  4. Do you know how much other countries made?
  5. Do know anyone who has Lou Gehrig’s Disease?
I hope you enjoyed my blog on ALS and I am excited to see your comments!

Crisis in Ukraine

So apparently, Russian Rebels and the Ukrainian government and soldiers are ready for a truce. I thought it would turn into some nuclear fueled war, but that’s coming from a kid in Grade 6. That  isn’t exactly the Ukrainian government now is it?

Now, back to the real stuff. First of all, this whole shabang is referred to as the Euromaiden Movement and took place on the 22nd of February, 2014. The cause of this movement was the procrastination of restoring the 2004 amendments to the Ukraine Constitution and the complete pardoning of arrested protesters instead of amnesty.  The protesters took control of government buildings in the capital city of Kiev where the Ukrainian Parliament voted to restore the 2004 Constitution of Ukraine.

As a result, President Yanukovych was overthrown and fled to Russia.  There were nationwide protests in East and South Ukraine against the government in Kiev and nationwide destruction of Soviet monuments.  This began the Crimean crisis and the Russian military intervention in Ukraine.  During this, Russia amassed large numbers of Russian troops near Ukraine’s borders, indicating that they would be a military threat if need be.

There were quotes from the current Ukrainian President, Petro Poroshenko saying, ”Look, Ukraine is fighting for peace.”

I sure hope he’s right,  that they’re fighting for peace.  Another quote from Poroshenko is, ” I’m ready to do my best to stop the war.”

The Ukrainian president and a bunch of NATO leaders agreed that Moscow,  (thats in Russia) should be punished for its role in the insurgency (Russia’s military being placed on Ukrainian soil without cause or permission). The rebels said that they are ready to declare a truce if an agreement can be reached on a political settlement for the mostly Russian-Speaking region.

As it stands now the European countries are all putting sanctions on Russia for their role in their interference in Ukraine’s political agenda.

Question: If you were the Ukrainian President, what would you do about the insurgents in the Ukraine?  Would you want to keep the peace or would you rather fight Russia knowing that you have the backing of so many other countries?

School

Most kids are going off to middle school know, some are excited some are not. Once where off in middle school we will have to live without a couple things that are little but are important in some way or another. We will have no recess, which i could honestly care less about but for some people, it is the end of the world. We won’t have every subject taught in one class, you would have to go to a different class every time it is a new subject, which is the end of me. Lockers... are the worst, we won’t have hooks anymore, i get assigned a locker to store my stuff in. Those  are  just some of the changes, another big one is taking a shower after gym and giants are constantly around you.
In elementary we don’t get homework everyday but when you get homework it is very easily done in middle school you get homework every single day and the homework is much harder. The teachers act a little more advanced now, like they won’t give second chances to people that didn’t do it ,cough*.

Some could say that is terrible, I agree, but Jr.High can have some good things too. Now we get to pick some optional classes  that look really good we also won’t be teased for being young. In the school i'm going to there is hot lunch every single but no cafeteria we eat in this thing called “The Pit”,which looks similar to the music room. There is one class about robotics and how to survive in the wild. We won’t be treated like little kids anymore and it will be very scary on the first day, but i promise it will be better just give it a couple days you will get used to the change . Jr.High is where everything starts falling your in place, when you decide what you want to be when you're older what your life is going to mean .

As you can read school gets a lot harder so enjoy what time you have left in elementary !

I have some questions

Are you excited for middle school? If so why, if not why?
What classes are you going to take?
Which parts are hard to get used to?

Sports VS. Video Games
Sports vs. video games has become a very, very big debate, and I just happen to realise that right now, so I'm gonna write a blog post about it;
video games is a big household argument. For example; your mom or dad won't let you play more than half an hour of video games a day (my dad does, anyway). Some people like that fact, some people don't. My friend, epic cat 600 (screen name), even says I have bad parents, on that fact, but that's just a bit of an example of what friends are like!! I think that videogames can be a waste of my time AND something to do when I'm really bored. Ex.: let's say I'm at my friends house and all he/she wants to do is video games when it's, like, 20 DEGREES CELSIUS  and there's NO clouds[not pointing fingers] and you got the Heebee-Jeebees; BAD. Let's say you just woke up and it's SATURDAY!! and you're really tired 'n' you can't think of anything good to do; GOOD.
Sports, on the other hand, can be even BETTER than playing an XBOX ONE for the first time!!! I love sports and who doesn't, for that matter! I have played soccer since I was 5 and stopped playing hockey when I was 5 1/2. For me there's always something going on about sports Ex. The Olympics! For me, Its kinda hard NOT to think about sports once a day!
So: The big question is: what would win: VIDEO GAMES or SPORTS?!?! Well, If you ask me, THEY BOTH WIN!!!!!! :P

Beach Glass Jewelry

Hi! Today I will be talking about Beach Glass Jewelry. Making beach glass jewelry is one of my favourite hobbies. Most of you probably haven’t seen or heard of Beach Glass Jewelry or beach glass before, and if you have, its probably because I have given you a piece of beach glass. It is basically just glass that has been broken up and put into the sea or ocean. Then the glass has  been worn down by the water and then washed up on shore where people find it. It is very pretty because it comes in all shapes, sizes, and colours. Some common colours of beach glass are: Brown, blue, clear, and green, even though I have seen and found the colours  red, purple, and yellow. Beach glass can come in many sizes with some pieces being as small as a grain of sand, or some being 4 inches in length. I have lots of beach glass from when I went to Nova Scotia in 2012 and found it on the beach.

Beach glass jewelry is actually pretty easy to make….once you get the hang of it. All you really need is some wire and wire tools, beach glass and beads. You just have to make a loop in the middle of the wire then put it at the top of the beach glass and wrap it around the glass. After or during, you can add beads to it. Most of the time you can find the glass  on the beach in Nova Scotia or on any other beach even though it is most commonly found in Nova Scotia. When I went there for a vacation, I filled a whole box of beach glass and brought it home to make jewelry. At a fundraiser to raise money for my metaphorical great aunts cancer treatments, I sold the jewelry I had made and raised about $100 selling them for $5 each.

I have been making beach glass jewelry since I was 8 years old. It is really fun to do if you are a girl.( not saying it isn’t fun if you’re a boy) Last weekend , I went to my aunts house for a sleepover to make beach glass jewelry. It was really fun because  we also did rainbow loom ,watched a movie and she made me a pair of earrings in 30 mins !
After I had to go to a birthday party and I gave the birthday girl a  necklace charm for her birthday. I also gave my teacher last year a necklace charm for her birthday.

If you have any questions about on of my favourite hobbies, come ask me!!
Now I have some questions for you:
1. Have you ever heard of beach glass and  were you interested in it ?
2.Have you ever received a piece of jewelry that was made of beach glass or looked like  it was made of  beach glass?
3. What is your favourite hobby or hobbies?
4.have you ever found beach glass anywhere?

Thanks for reading!
