It is a good week in the forest for Division II. We have the pleasure of welcoming a local author in to our classrooms to share with us some of his wisdom of good story writing. The author that is teaching us this week is Marty Chan.I believe that it is such a good experience to have professional come into that classroom to teach a specific aspect of writing. Marty will come into our classroom four times this week.I am sure during these times we will enjoy his stories and learn some new techniques.

Do you think it is beneficial to have guest speakers come into the classroom and help out or do you think it is a distraction? Please Comment!

  1. Welcome to the blogging atmosphere, Forest 19!

Having witnessed Marty Chan's fun and easy-going style of teaching was a privilege. He has taught my students many simple techniques to create a captivating story.

Inviting writers-in-residence, artists-in-residence or special programs into the classroom is a wonderful idea and it exposes students to a variety of experiences.

I remember one of the best projects we did last year was the Director's Cut animation. Everyone, and I do mean EVERY student from my class, thoroughly enjoyed the project from beginning to end.

  2. I thought that having Marty Chan come to the school was a great idea as he had many good ideas/story's that had suspense and a funny ending!

I personally wished that he would stay with the school for the whole year even though it is clear that he is a busy author!

He worked great with the classrooms and had some really good activity's that were fun and helped the classrooms write a fun story while having fun!

I don't know what he did with the other classrooms but, when he tought in our classroom he did an absolutely fantastic job! He got very into the story's he was telling and he would do actions to go along with story's that made them more interesting!

  6. I liked Marty because he was really intelligent and very comical. Marty was a nice gentlemen like person. He was really cool and I was so lucky to have a chance to meet a writer and learn and talk to him. He taught us how a juicy, descriptive piece of writing looks like. He also taught us that just because you’re done doesn’t make you finished. He talked to us on how many times he had to edit and edit his work. On his first draft of Graffiti Ghoul, He had to check it and fix it and make seven more drafts of the piece of writing to make it perfect. He also helped us on our own scary story and taught us about how to make it a lot better by telling us to write more or how can you have a better ending or how can you do that and all. He was really nice to us and had a very comical story about his life when he was a youngster or younger than that. Marty was so amazing! It was sad because he had to leave so soon. Marty was definitely not a distraction to me. He was really helpful.

P.S.- before the comment above, the fourth comment has a lot of spelling and capitalization problems. You also spelled Marty wrong. You said Mary!

  9. It was nice having Marty Chan visiting our school. I honestly think that It would be a distraction for students because students would be asking the guest speaker questions and then they wouldn't be able to finish there work because they will be asking to many questions.

  12. Yeah I think its beneficial to have someone with as much skill as Marty chan did telling us how to write.
that week was allot of fun.
he told us some hilarious story's and we played some really fun games.

then he told us we were going to write a suspense story.
